While waiting in the lobby of the hotel in Malmo for a taxi, I met this young woman named Jenny. She is in a Swedish rock band. We took the same taxi and she told me about a blues band she is in to gain a profit whereas no profit is gained from her rock band. Her style was cool; it was vintage meets rock-trendy (as trendy as Swedes go) yet edgy. She is the lead singer. We started talking about the Donnas and a Swedish rock band called the Sahara Hot Nights. The number of Swedish people I have met 2, Copenhagians (my terminology) 0, those from the Netherlands 0 and still pending.

Cultural Differences

  • Kobenhavn

  • The conversion of the Danish kroner to the U.S. dollar is 6 to 1.

  • women dress for comfort-baggier clothes

  • both sexes wear a lot of cargo pants because of practicality/necessity because they walk/bike everywhere or don’t have a car

  • teenage boys buy their pants bigger and wear a belt-no sagging

  • clothing is not sex defining

  • punk style exists-not as much as in Sweden

  • more teen smoking/younger age

  • bathrooms the sex defining labels read as ladies/gentlemen not men/women

  • bathrooms have individual stalls that contain both a toilet and a sink - separate from rest of bathroom

  • heavily influenced by American culture clothing, speak perfect English, fast food chains (McDonalds, 7-eleven), technology (ipods), style (skateboarding/punk), music, movies (movies are in English w/Danish subtitles)

  • more women hold jobs of authority - security/police officers
